The British Touring Car Championship is the UK’s biggest motor racing show, with massive audience appeal.

But don't say we didn't warn you

This is no time to be proud. And certainly no time for bravado. The ‘Touareg Unlimited’ experience allows for neither.

As test drives go, it’s more a test of nerve: the moment you discover both your and the Touareg’s limits (we’re not overly concerned about the Touareg’s ). To give you some idea, 45° gradients, 35° side-slopes, tyre-swallowing ruts and halfmetre-deep water courses come with the territory. Fortunately, so do permanent 4-wheel drive, a low-ratio gearbox, hill-start assist and electronic differential locks ( transferring up to 100% grip to any one wheel ).

You could say the Touareg won’t get you out of trouble because it won’t get you into trouble. To prove it, though, you’ve got to invite trouble in the first place. So, as much as anything, it’s a test of faith. Even the on-road sections are no stroll in the park. Sure, they’re designed to demonstrate how the Touareg rides, handles and feels like a luxury saloon. But they also throw up stuff where luxury saloons would fear for their tread. Straight-line braking at velocity and the fiendish traffic-cone slalom being just two of the no-holds-barred-take-it-to-the-edge-seatof-your-pants-nowhere-to-hide extremes of the mini circuit.

Clearly, then, there’s no shame or disgrace in giving our prize draw a miss. After all, who’s to know you didn’t enter?
